Street Art, Testaccio: The Jumping Wolf

In recent years, Rome has literally covered itself with a pleasant wave of Street Art.
Although this world is distant from my academic training, purely centered on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, my restless and curious soul always transports towards new sectors of art to be discovered, without ever getting bored.
In what is considered one of the popular districts par excellence of Rome, Testaccio, exactly in Via Galvani at the corner of Via Zabaglia, the Belgian writer, who signs himself ROA, creates in a single day, on March 27, 2014, a “jumping” wolf and covers the facade of a building for almost 30 meters!
The subject chosen by ROA is perhaps a “wanting to win easy”. Who knows if the artist has thought of triumphing, using this subject, even on the ideas of the most skeptical inhabitants of Testaccio.
Anyone would recognize in the she-wolf, the splendor and glories of the Eternal city, with the due differences compared to the classic she-wolf with the twins Romulus and Remus!
Like every piece of street art that appeared in Rome, the Lupa by ROA also brought with it conflicting opinions. Could not this “noise” be the sense of the cultural avant-garde?
It seems, however, that in a short time, the inhabitants of the neighborhood got used to and were lenient towards the new “inhabitant” of the place.
Roa, is known as the zoologist writer, who comes from Ghent.
Study the drawings and engravings of ancient medieval bestiaries and sketch bodies and furs with Flemish precision.
His art wants to give voice to the pain of animals. The Lupa di Testaccio, with this jump, represents “a hymn to an instinct that should never be trampled”.

Negli ultimi anni, Roma si è letteralmente ricoperta di una piacevole ondata di Street Art.
Per quanto questo mondo sia distante dalla mia formazione accademica, prettamente incentrata sul XVI e XVII secolo, il mio animo inquieto e curioso mi trasporta sempre verso nuovi settori dell’arte da scoprire, senza mai annoiarmi.
In quello che è considerato tra i quartieri popolari per eccellenza di Roma, Testaccio, esattamente in Via Galvani angolo Via Zabaglia, il writer belga, che si firma ROA, realizza in un solo giorno, il 27 marzo 2014, un lupo “che salta” e ricopre la facciata di una palazzina per quasi 30 metri!
Il soggetto scelto da ROA è forse un “voler vincere facile”. Chissà se l’artista abbia pensato di trionfare, utilizzando questo animale, anche sulle idee degli abitanti più scettici di Testaccio.
Chiunque , riconoscerebbe nella Lupa, fasti e glorie della città Eterna, con le dovute differenze rispetto alla classica Lupa con i gemelli Romolo e Remo!
Come ogni pezzo di street art apparso a Roma, anche la Lupa di ROA ha portato con sè pareri contrastanti. Non sarà proprio questo “rumore” il vero senso delle avanguardie culturali?
Sembra, però, che in tempi brevi, gli abitanti del quartiere si siano abituati e siano stati clementi verso questo nuovo “abitante” del luogo.
Roa, è conosciuto come il writer zoologo, che arriva da Ghent.
Studia i disegni e le incisioni degli antichi bestiari medievali e tratteggia corpi e pellicce con una precisione fiamminga.
La sua arte vuole dar voce al dolore degli animalii. La Lupa di Testaccio, con questo salto, rappresenta “un inno all’istinto che non dovrebbe essere mai calpestato”.
